A scant 13 years ago a little ball of fur “snuck” home with us in a cat carrier we borrowed from the Parental Units. We wanted to surprise our then-three-year-old daughter, and virtually held our collective breath all the way home, hoping Drum would not make a sound as he snuggled up in the carrier on the seat next to her.

To his credit, not a peep!

We smuggled the carrier up to his room, then made some sort of pretence that our youngling had to open the carrier door (to let it air out, or some such). The squeal of delight as “her” Drum was discovered, and then the brief flash of horror, “What will Grammie and Grandpa say?” and the quick phone call to see if our “stowaway” had to be returned. Much relief as the reassurance came back that Drum could, indeed, remain with us.

And remain he did, until the very end today, May 31, 2016.
