So, I finally decided what to spend my Henry’s Gift Cards on: a set of Tiffen Close-Up Filters. I hemmed and hawed about this for a long time. Finally, after getting a set ordered in for testing, I went for it.
This is a test shot, taken at the store before I bought the filters. My 18-200 is racked out all the way to 200mm, and all three filters (+4, +2, and +1) are attached. It’s handheld, and since my focal distance dropped from about a foot to about 3 inches, I might have even manually focused.
If you look closely, you can see the area in the center of the image is pretty well in focus, and the outer areas are a bit blurry. This is a side effect of the filters, and to be expected. However, I am quite pleased with the gain in the image size. Normally, I would not be able to get in so close, nor get such detail, from something as small as a dime. With the filters, well, here you are.
Ultimately I would like to get a 100mm macro lens, but there are other things that must happen first. This is a good start. Now with the light box and tripod I have a nice little combo pack for doing some interesting closeup work. Any requests? 😉
