When I was growing up there were half a dozen corner stores within a few blocks of my grandparents’ house, two of them at each end of their block.
Over the years they slowly disappeared, being returned back to residential dwellings. Except the one at the end of our block, the B&E (for Briscoe & Edward).
When I bought my grandparents’ house back in ’96 I was happy to see the store still in operation. We could always make the quick jaunt to the corner store for the little things (smokes, lottery, candy) which, of course, was convenient.
A few years ago the store was sold to new owners who attempted to run it for a couple of years. One day the for sale sign went up. A few weeks later the store closed. Now, over a year later, no movement. Someone was in a few weeks ago and filled a 15 yard bin with stuff, likely the old stock that was left behind.
Given the current economy and trend away from corner stores, I don’t see this store reopening. Since the B&E had been around for as long as I can remember means, to me, that this is the end of an era.
